A Squid Has 3 Hearts. In December 2015 the first live giant squid to be seen by humans was filmed in Japan. Video footage captures the squid passing by the camera. It's hard to tell if it knows that it is being watched but something about its gaze (seemingly toward the camera lens) makes one think it possible. Squid have three hearts: two branchial hearts feed the gills, while the larger systemic heart that pumps blood around the body. The hushing sound of the squid's breath is the sonic foundation for this piece. Natural sounds in conversation with music by composer and musician Eric Mandat conflate the proposed landscape and complicate the relationship between the viewer and the performer.
